Low blood pressure, what is it?

The force with which the heart pumps blood into the vessels is called blood pressure. The force with which this occurs can vary from person to person. It is also possible that your blood pressure is not always the same, this can have several causes. Normally, blood pressure is at normal levels, meaning your whole body is getting enough blood. When your blood pressure is so low that your body is unable to function normally, you are dealing with low blood pressure. When your blood pressure is measured, it is done on the basis of two values. Both the upper pressure and the lower pressure are measured.

Upper pressure and lower pressure

The upper pressure is the force or pressure with which the heart pumps blood into your vessels. This is also called the contraction phase of the heart. The lower pressure is the pressure at the time of relaxation of the heart. The heart will then fill with blood again. A value is then also assigned to this. A value of a healthy person's upper pressure is normally between 100 and 140 mm HG. The lower pressure is usually between 60 and 80 mm HG.

Normal blood pressure

The ideal blood pressure for an adult in good health is 120/80. Where 120 is the upper pressure and 80 the lower pressure. Normally the upper pressure should be between 100 and 140. The lower pressure should be between 60 and 80.

Low blood pressure

Low blood pressure, also called hypotension, is a blood pressure that is lower than an upper pressure of 90 and a lower pressure of 60. So having a blood pressure lower than 90 over 60, means you officially have low blood pressure. A low blood pressure is generally less likely to be noticed than a high blood pressure. This is mainly due to the fact that the symptoms of low blood pressure do not always occur. Low blood pressure can be very annoying, but is generally not dangerous.

Causes low blood pressure

Heredity can cause you to suffer from low blood pressure. But, of course, there may be other causes of low blood pressure. For example, you can think of pregnancy, dehydration, a malfunctioning heart, and an open wound. An allergic reaction can cause your blood pressure to be lowered. People who deal with stress on a daily basis can also have low blood pressure, the same goes for people with stomach and intestinal problems.

Symptoms of low blood pressure

You may have low blood pressure and not notice it at all. However, people do usually experience symptoms of low blood pressure. For example, dizziness when you stand up suddenly. You may also have to deal with a lightheaded feeling and even the possibility that you may faint. Feeling unwell is also a symptom of low blood pressure. Other symptoms that may occur are a pale appearance, dilated pupils, a weak pulse and fatigue. Sweat attacks are also common and people dealing with low blood pressure can also easily feel nauseous.

The main symptoms of lower blood pressure (not in order):

  • Feeling weak and limp
  • Frequent dizziness
  • Frequent nausea
  • Certain medications
  • Fatigue

Nevertheless, it is often the case that the symptoms do not always show themselves. It is therefore wise to have your blood pressure measured from time to time. You can do this at the doctor's office or, if you have one, take a measurement yourself with a blood pressure monitor. If you are suffering from the abovementioned low blood pressure symptoms, you would be wise to measure your blood pressure.

Treatment of low blood pressure

A doctor can prescribe medications, these medications will cause your blood pressure to be raised. If you have no additional symptoms, a doctor may choose not to prescribe medication. You can also contribute by raising your own blood pressure. For example, you can eat more salt, drink plenty of water, avoid coffee and alcohol, and get enough exercise. It is not advisable to take a long shower or sit in a hot bath. It is also important to get enough rest, especially if you have worked for a long day.
