Tips to prevent low blood sugar

What can you do? To quickly remedy a hypo, you need between 15 and 20 grams of fast carbohydrates. Taking glucose is, of course, the best option of all. If you want your blood sugar to rise by about 3 mmol/l, you need about 20 grams of glucose. For example: 200 ml soda; 7 tablets of grape sugar, glucose, or dextrose; 40 ml lemonade syrup (with water).

You will notice that you will soon start to feel better, after you have restored your blood sugar in this way. Unfortunately, this is only a short-term solution. You will benefit from it for two hours at most. After at least XNUMX minutes, you should check your blood sugar again. If your blood sugar is still too low, you need more glucose. In any case, contact your doctor if you experience a hypo more frequently. But be sure to contact your doctor if the hypo treatment doesn't work out.

Be careful, and never take more than necessary

When people are trying to raise their blood sugar levels, they sometimes tend to take in far more carbohydrates than they need. But if you do that, your blood sugar level will actually get too high again, and that's not healthy either. It is therefore certainly not recommended, if only because it is bad for your figure.

Keep a journal of everything you eat and drink, as well as your use of medication and the exercise you get in a day. In this way you can start to make connections, and try to find the cause of the hypo. You can then take this into account in the future. Sometimes it is wise to adjust your medication or your diet. Therefore, always stay in close contact with your doctor so that he or she can help you keep your blood sugar as stable as possible.
