Low blood sugar, what are the values?

To find out if your blood sugar level is too low, you need to take a measurement. When you take a measurement, you will see certain blood sugar values. It is important that you are able to assess these values, so that you can see whether your blood sugar levels are indeed too low. (or perhaps too high) That is why you can read on this page which values indicate a blood sugar level that is too low, so that you are immediately warned if you do indeed have a blood sugar level that is too low.

Blood sugar levels: a brief introduction

The values of your blood sugar level are always expressed in millimoles per liter, or mmol / l for short. The amount of millimoles per liter actually indicates how much glucose there is in the blood per liter. By measuring the blood sugar levels, you can also find out how much glucose is in your blood.

Normally, your blood sugar levels are between 4 and 8 mmol / l. However, it is important to know that these values will only be shown if you have not eaten or drank anything a few hours before the measurement. If you measure the blood sugar levels after eating, the values should be around 9 mmol/l about two hours after eating. When the blood sugar level often exceeds 6 mmol/l on an empty stomach, it is referred to as diabetes. If the blood sugar level is often higher than 11 mmol/l, just after eating, then we also speak of diabetes.

The values of low blood sugar

If your blood sugar level is too low, it is referred to as hypoglycemia. It is important to know exactly when your blood sugar level is too low, so that you can respond properly.

You officially have a blood sugar level that is too low if the blood sugar values are lower than 4 mmol/l. If the difference is very small, the blood sugar level is only slightly too low. This does not have to be dangerous and is therefore no cause for alarm. For example, if you have a blood sugar value of 2 mmol / l, then you officially have a low blood sugar level or hypoglycemia. This can be dangerous.

When performing a blood sugar measurement, it is important to keep a close eye on the values of the measurement. You don't have to panic if you measure just under 4 mmol/l, but a measurement of, for example, 3 mmol/l or 2 mmol/l does indicate a low blood sugar level. In this case, you must respond correctly so that the blood sugar level rises again.

The values of a blood sugar level that is too high

It can also happen that your blood sugar level is too high. In this case it is referred to as hyperglycemia. You officially have a blood sugar level that is too high if you see a value higher than 8 mmol/l when measuring the blood sugar level. If the values are more often above 6 mmol/l, then it is referred to as diabetes. Only if the value is higher than 8 mmol/l, then you have a blood sugar level that is too high at that moment.
